Who
We Are
We are an alliance of educational facilities, private businesses, and various
state agencies committed to the responsible reclamation and recycling of
electronic waste, such as computers and cell phones. To learn more about us,
read our brochure.
What We Do
We solicit donations of used computer equipment
from businesses and individuals. Computer science students salvage the usable
parts and refurbish computers
to be passed along to schools, non-profit groups, and needy students. Parts
that are unusable are recycled by our partners. Read the Inside
Columbia article about us.
The Need
Everyday, thousands of computers are discarded, filling our already
bulging landfills.
At the same time, hundreds of students are without a home
computer
and dozens of schools and non-profit organizations lack the computer resources
they need.
The Exchange is helping to bridge this gap. Students of our
educational partners refurbish donated machines and give them to fellow
students and
other organizations. Not only are they getting hands-on experience
in computer science, they have the satisfaction of knowing their efforts
are
for a
worthy cause.
Our History
The Exchange began as a computer repair class at North Callaway High School
in the fall of 2003. In the spring of 2005, the program became a Microsoft
Authorized Refurbisher, allowing us to recondition donated computers and pass
them along to those in need. Later that year, North Callaway teamed
with Mid-Missouri Recycling in Columbia to recycle computer parts that
were no longer serviceable. In 2006, the Missouri Computer Exchange was born.Click here to learn more about the award-winning program at North Callaway High School.
